Penetration Grade Bitumen

Common Grades: 40/50, 60/70, 80/100

Overview: Penetration grade bitumen is characterized by its penetration value, indicating the hardness or softness of the bitumen. The grades are determined by the depth (in tenths of a millimeter) to which a standard needle penetrates the bitumen sample under specific conditions.

Applications:

Road Construction: Ideal for hot mix asphalt (HMA) for base and surface courses.

Climate Suitability:

• 40/50: Suitable for warmer climates due to its hardness.
• 60/70: Versatile for moderate climates.
• 80/100: Preferred in cooler regions for its softness.

Technical Specifications:

• Penetration at 25°C: Varies by grade.
• Softening Point: Typically ranges between 42°C to 52°C.
• Ductility at 25°C: Minimum of 100 cm.

Viscosity Grade (VG) Bitumen

Common Grades: VG-10, VG-20, VG-30, VG-40

Overview: Viscosity grade bitumen is classified based on its viscosity at 60°C and 135°C, providing a more accurate performance measure under varying temperatures compared to penetration grades.

Applications:

• VG-10: Suitable for spraying applications and surface dressing in cold climates.
• VG-20: Ideal for paving in cold regions.
• VG-30: Commonly used for paving in moderate climates.
• VG-40: Best for heavy traffic roads in hot climates.

Technical Specifications:

Viscosity at 60°C:

• VG-10: 800–1200 poise
• VG-20: 1600–2400 poise
• VG-30: 2400–3600 poise
• VG-40: 3200–4800 poise

Penetration at 25°C: Varies by grade.

Softening Point: Increases with higher VG grades.

Performance Grade (PG) Bitumen

Common Grades: PG 64-10, PG 76-22

Overview: Performance grade bitumen is designed based on the climatic conditions and traffic loads of the pavement location. The grading system considers the high and low pavement temperatures to ensure optimal performance.

Applications:

• PG 64-10: Suitable for regions with moderate temperatures and traffic.
• PG 76-22: Engineered for areas with high temperatures and heavy traffic loads, offering enhanced resistance to rutting and thermal cracking.

Technical Specifications:

• High-Temperature Performance: PG 64-10 withstands up to 64°C; PG 76-22 up to 76°C.
• Low-Temperature Performance: PG 64-10 down to -10°C; PG 76-22 down to -22°C.
• Elastic Recovery: Higher in modified PG grades, indicating better performance.

Oxidized Bitumen (Blown Asphalt)

Common Grades: 85/25, 90/40

Overview: Oxidized bitumen is produced by blowing air through penetration grade bitumen at elevated temperatures, resulting in a product with higher softening points and lower penetration values.

Applications:

• Roofing: Used in roofing felts and membranes.
• Waterproofing: Ideal for damp-proofing and waterproofing applications.
• Industrial Uses: Employed in pipe coatings, paints, and adhesives.
